A politician has sparked fury in Peru after she was photographed getting an advisor to cut her toenails.

The photo shows MP Lucinda Vásquez reclining on a sofa and talking on the phone while her former advisor, Edward Rengifo Pezo, trims her toenails.

The congresswoman used staff to perform various tasks unrelated to their duties, such as preparing her breakfast at her home, the TV show Cuarto Poder claimed on Sunday.

The 67-year-old claimed that circulation of the pedicure photo is down to vengeful former employees.

She said in a statement: ‘I categorically reject any attempt at manipulation through the misuse of information that seeks to distort my parliamentary work.

The photo of the nail trim appeared on Peruvian TV last week, sparking outrage across the country

‘This is revenge against me.

‘This situation significantly demonstrates an unprecedented attack that seeks to generate unrest in my environment and panic among the public.

‘This has been engineered by former employees of my office whom I did not allow to take advantage of the situation to fulfill their personal political needs.’

Vásquez urged the public ‘not to be deceived’ by ‘unsubstantiated publications that only seek to generate confusion for purposes unrelated to the public interest.’

The photo was taken on November 6, 2024, in office 103 of the Santos Atahualpa building.

The Peruvian congress’ ethics committee is considering launching an investigation into Vásquez’s behaviour.

The committee will weigh up if she has committed offences that warrant sanction or criminal charges for the alleged crime of misuse of state resources.

Parliamentarians are calling for Vasquez to be suspended from the bench and sanctioned

Calls to suspend her from the bench are tearing through parliament.

The head of congress, Fernando Rospigliosi, described the behaviour as humiliating.

‘It is a humiliation for the employees of the Congress of the Republic.

‘This should not happen, and those who commit this type of act should be sanctioned.

‘I hope the Ethics Commission takes all appropriate measures,’ he stated.

The former advisor, Pezo, explained on the TV show Ampliación de Noticias on Thursday why he cut his boss’ toenails.

He justified the actions as an ‘act of humanity’ and said he considered it ‘first aid’ due to the congresswoman’s deteriorating health, having been diagnosed with cancer.

Vásquez has also allegedly hired relatives at her congress office, including three great-nephews, it was revealed.

Peru’s parliament is already rocked by turmoil, with one of the world’s most unpopular leaders having been removed from office earlier in October.

Peru’s congress voted to impeach the country’s embattled president, Dina Boluarte, on October 9 after a period marred by accusations of corruption, protests and violent crime.
