Rick Stein has singled out some of his favourite Sydney dining spots – and they include his top picks for a casual meal and classic pub fare.
The British celebrity chef, who spends part of each year in Australia, revealed that both his go-to takeaway and his preferred pub are tucked away in Neutral Bay, only streets apart.
For a quick bite, Rick’s choice is the hole-in-the-wall Japanese restaurant Tobikiri, nestled in a quiet street behind Military Road.
‘I love Tobikiri, a tiny husband-and-wife Japanese restaurant in Neutral Bay with about 10 tables,’ Rick told Broadsheet.
‘It’s amazing what a husband and wife and one waiter can do.’
Tobikiri is a hidden gem that serves up a selection of traditional Japanese dishes. It boasts glowing online reviews, with a local describing it as ‘a great little authentic restaurant’.
Sashimi and sushi plates are their signature, with a wide range to choose from. If you can’t decide, go for an assorted 10-piece sashimi platter for $25.80 or an assorted six-piece sushi and baby roll plate for $28.80.
Classic sushi rolls are also on the menu starting from $6.50, including all your favourites, such as salmon and avocado and California rolls.
Rick Stein recently revealed two of his favourite casual dining spots: Japanese restaurant Tobikiri for a quick takeaway and The Oaks for pub fare. Both venues are in Sydney’s Neutral Bay

For mains, popular choices include chicken kara-age and teriyaki salmon – all priced from upwards of $27.80. There’s also a selection of noodle dishes, such as crowd-favourite tempura Udon Noodles for $25.
A perfect meal-for-one is a bento box, starting at $37.80 and come accompanied by sides like sashimi, salad, miso soup and rice.
Just a short stroll away is The Oaks, an iconic venue positioned at the bustling corner of Military Road and Ben Boyd Road. Rick confirmed that it is the perfect place to go with a big group.
‘It’s a firm favourite of ours and normally the first and last place that we have dinner when we arrive and depart Australia,’ Rick said of the Neutral Bay pub.
He even joked: ‘There was a persistent rumour that I had bought [The Oaks] for $175 million – if only!’
The Oaks is renowned for its traditional pub food and sprawling outdoor beer garden – a popular spot for drinkers, diners and anyone after a laid-back catch-up beneath the trees.
Weekends and public holidays can be busy, so arriving early is wise if you want to secure a coveted garden table.
The casual, upbeat atmosphere makes it a venue that welcomes everyone, from groups of friends and families to anyone seeking a hearty meal.

On the menu at The Oaks’ main restaurant The Grill are small share plates like truffle fries ($15) and salt & pepper squid ($25).
An impressive grill menu offers a range of steaks accompanied by sauces, with prices starting at $40.
Naturally, all the pub classics are on the menu, like burgers ($29), beef and pot pie ($31), battered fish with chips and veggies ($37) or a classic chicken schnitzel with fries and gravy ($29).
Or if you’re in the mood for pizza, a range of gourmet options is available, starting at $27 each.
Rick’s appreciation for Sydney’s lower north shore venues doesn’t stop there. Asked about his favourite coffee spot, Rick named Avenue Road café in nearby Mosman.
‘Every time I go there, I have a large flat white, an orange juice and scrambled eggs and bacon on sourdough,’ Rick told Good Food.
British celebrity chef Rick Stein also recently revealed that Avenue Road Cafe in Mosman is one of his favourite places for brunch and a coffee

Tucked away in Mosman Village at 185 Avenue Road, the café has long been a local favourite
Tucked away in Mosman Village at 185 Avenue Road, the café has long been a local favourite, but Stein’s seal of approval has cemented its reputation as one of Sydney’s must-visit brunch spots.
Open daily from 6am, it’s the kind of place that caters to everyone – early risers grabbing a takeaway flat white, families meeting after a trip to Balmoral Beach, or friends lingering over hotcakes and hash browns.
Ricotta hotcakes, Himalayan hash with halloumi, and the signature ‘Halloumi Heights’ toast stacked with avocado, mushrooms, spinach, poached egg and house-made tomato relish have all earned cult status.
With its prime spot in Mosman Village, buzzing atmosphere, and a menu that manages to be both creative and comforting, it’s easy to see why Stein has made Avenue Road part of his Sydney routine.
