Over the summer I was lucky enough to be invited to a 60th birthday at which the after-dinner entertainment was a private performance by one of the UK’s leading male pop stars. More eye-popping than the actual show, though, was how incredible said star looked. He was a mere shadow of his former self, prancing around the stage in a silver catsuit. His secret? Semaglutide, or Ozempic as it is branded, a new diet drug that everybody – but everybody, darling, including one of the world’s most famous supermodels – is apparently taking. Originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, it…

Beavers will be released into the wild in England under licence for the first time, the government said today. The dam-making rodents had been extinct in this country since the 16th century after they were hunted for their meat, fur and scent glands. Now a licensing system has been launched to allow the release of beavers into the countryside to roam freely.Bringing back beavers will boost nature, supporters say, as they build dams which create ponds which hold back water, helping to prevent flooding and at the same time providing habitats for other wildlife.Farmers and landowners on whose land the beavers colonise…
A father of two who developed an incurable lung disease after making trendy quartz kitchen worktops has told how he was forced to quit his job to ‘save his life’. Ryan Fenton, from Ipswich in Suffolk, was employed as a stonemason to make the popular counters in 2016 and recalls how extraction systems at his workplace designed to remove dust were ‘ineffective’.Dust, he now knows, was slowly destroying his lungs with very breath. The 49-year-old’s body has been ravaged by silicosis, a terrifying disease that causes internal scarring and inflammation of the lungs — which medics say is irreversible and could kill him. Mr Fenton, who quit…
The explosion of SpaceX’s rocket Thursday night has sparked fears that NASA’s stranded astronauts could be stuck in space for even longer, or worse. SpaceX has been tasked with finally bringing Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore home from the International Space Station (ISS) later this month. But the company’s failed Starship launch has led many to question if SpaceX can bring the astronauts back safely or even as early as March 19 as promised. The wave of concern has swept social media, even though Starship is an entirely different spacecraft than the one that will bring Williams and Wilmore home this month. ‘Elon Musk’s SpaceX…

Thousands of women with a common form of breast cancer may not need any treatment at all, scientists suggested today.Around a fifth of all breast cancers are a slow-growing type of the disease which is contained in the milk ducts, known as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Under current UK guidance, treatment to tackle these early stage cancers involves surgery followed by radiotherapy to kill off any abnormal cells lurking in breast tissue. But US researchers, who tracked hundreds of women with DCIS, have discovered that this barrage of treatment makes little difference to whether or not the cancer progresses — or survival. The study…
