In her acceptance speech, the 45-year-old screenwriter singled out the ‘gorgeous human angels standing next to me’ and the rest of the cast and crew for making The Last Showgirl ‘as personal to them as it has always been to me.’
‘[It’s] a love letter to women, to working mothers, [and] especially to those of us who have been underestimated,’ Kate – who penned the script in 2014 – gushed onstage.
‘It’s also for artists in it for the sheer passion of craft.’
Song portrays showgirl Mary-Anne who – like Kiernan’s Jodie and Pamela Anderson’s Shelly – must plan for her future when their Las Vegas revue abruptly closes after a 30-year run.
The Last Showgirl – hitting US theaters January 10 and UK theaters February 28 – currently has a ‘certified fresh’ 81% critic approval rating out of 58 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
