When planning a getaway, most of us focus on packing lists and navigating endless luggage restrictions – but what you wear on the flight can be just as important.
According to fashion and celebrity stylist Lara Grayson, your travel outfit can significantly impact your comfort, wellness and overall flying experience.
From restrictive jeans to painful footwear, certain wardrobe choices can turn a smooth journey into a struggle.
On the flip side, breathable fabrics, relaxed silhouettes, and supportive shoes can make all the difference.
Lara shares the clothing, shoes, beauty essentials, and accessories she avoids when flying – and the 19 alternatives she recommends instead.
Whether you’re jetting off for a city break or a long-haul adventure this summer, here’s what to skip and what to wear for your most comfortable flight yet.

Celebrity stylist Lara Grayson reveals the clothing, shoes, beauty essentials, and accessories to avoid when flying – and the 19 alternatives she recommends instead
Jeans
Instead wear: Light, airy, comfortable trousers
For Lara, jeans are are a ‘big no-no’ when travelling on planes as they can be uncomfortable and restricting.
She adds: ‘Being a stylist I have trouble finding a pair I absolutely love and don’t feel completely restricted in.
‘I know jeans are a staple for a lot of people’s wardrobe but for a flight I would stay well clear of them, who wants to have a button digging into them for the duration of a flight while sitting down and trying to get comfy.’
Instead of jeans, she recommends lightweight linen or light, linen or cotton trousers with a stretch waistband, as well as tracksuit bottoms and a matching zip-up top.
Made from soft scuba jersey, these joggers strike the perfect balance between comfort and polish. Side stripe detailing and press-stud openings add an elevated touch, while the elastic pull cord waist keeps things relaxed.
Lightweight with a touch of texture, these plissé trousers offer a modern take on airport chic. The high-rise waist and relaxed wide leg feel elevated while remaining ultra-comfortable. Made from 100% recycled polyester.
If you’re headed from runway to resort, these lightweight satin trousers transition seamlessly. The geometric print adds interest, and the soft feel keeps you cool during transit. Pair with a simple tank or the matching shirt.
Pair with matching trousers or denim for an easy-going outfit with flair. The lightweight satin keeps you cool, while the long sleeves and collared neckline add elegance.
A reliable pick for casual travel, these wide-leg joggers are made from a stretchy, soft modal blend. The elastic waistband and side pockets make them perfect for moving through airport terminals with ease.
An ideal layering piece for unpredictable cabin temperatures, this navy sweatshirt offers a high neck, side pockets, and a relaxed fit. Throw it over leggings or joggers for a sporty and comfy airport look.
Jumpsuits
Instead wear: Barrel leg trousers and t-shirt
Lara says: ‘I would say jumpsuits are also a definite no for a flight if you’re like me and go to the toilet a lot you don’t want to be in the cubicle fighting for your life with your all-in-one.
‘Go for a barrel leg trouser and oversized t-shirt which is still comfy and cool. I love these ones from Tu at Sainsburys.’
A summer-friendly travel trouser made from breathable double-cloth cotton, these dark red barrel-leg trousers feature a relaxed shape and an elasticated waistband – ideal for long-haul comfort. With side and back pockets, they’re as practical as they are stylish.
A flattering high-waisted fit with a breezy wide leg, these organic cotton trousers offer effortless ease for any travel day. The soft structure gently skims the body, while side pockets keep essentials within reach.
Heels
Instead wear: Flats, sandals or slip-on shoes
Shoes are a very important part of planning your travel look – and, for Lara, heels are best worn once the plane has touched down on the tarmac.
She adds: ‘The ballet flat is still trending and has become a staple in my wardrobe for everyday not just for my traveling days. They are so lightweight and not bulky so can easily still work with your holiday wardrobe.
‘If that’s really not for you then go for a slip on or sandal if traveling in the summer months. Top tip is that I always put a pair of socks in my hand luggage incase my feet get cold during the flight.’
Handwoven for breathability and equipped with a secure strap, these Mary Janes are a chic, comfortable choice for navigating airports. The soft leather ensures wear-all-day ease.
Breathable mesh, elastic top, and an easy slip-on design make these ballet pumps perfect for quick airport security checks. Available in versatile colours to match your outfit.
A stylish alternative to sneakers, these leather sliders feature crossover front straps and metal detailing – easy to slip off mid-flight and sleek enough for arrival.
Statement jewellery
Instead wear: Simple necklace or studs
Lara admits to wearing ‘a lot of jewellery,’ but for flights, she keeps chunky, statement pieces zipped up in her luggage.
She advises: ‘Avoid bangles or big statement necklaces as well as oversized and heavy earrings.
‘Instead opt for a more minimal jewellery look, with a simple chain necklace and some small hoops or studs, and save the statement pieces for when you reach your holiday destination.’
Simple yet striking, this chain lays flat against your collarbone – perfect for layering or wearing solo. It won’t snag or feel bulky during your journey.
Add a little sparkle to your in-flight look with these celestial gold huggies. Lightweight and secure, they’re travel-ready and ideal for stacking.
Heavy make-up
Instead wear: Moisturiser and lip balm
According to Lara, wearing heavy make-up has the potential to dry out your skin.
She adds: ‘I would always carry some skincare products in my hand luggage so I can have a bit of a pamper on the plane, including a face mask and an intense moisturiser; oh and don’t forget a lip balm or oil.’
Cabin air is notoriously dry. Keep your skin soft and protected with this long-lasting moisturiser that hydrates for up to eight hours and defends against UV damage.
Part lip balm, part gloss – this balm delivers intense hydration with a subtle shine. A must-have for avoiding dry lips at 35,000 feet.
Underwire bras
Instead wear: Non-wired support
Lara said: ‘For flight mode you don’t necessarily want your underwear causing you to be uncomfortable.
‘If you do still need support opt for a non underwire that still has support, Lemonade Dolls has some great options for bigger busted ladies, as well as this one from Bravissimo.’
Made for all-day comfort without wires or padding, this pastel blue bralette offers support through reinforced mesh and wide adjustable straps – ideal for staying supported during long flights.
A seamless, non-wired plunge bra that disappears under clothing. Designed specifically for fuller busts, it offers support and comfort with extra coverage and a secure underband.
Claw hairclips
Instead wear: Soft scrunchies
Claw hairclips are all the range this year – but Lara warns to reconsider wearing them especially on long-haul flights.
She says: ‘Who needs something digging into their scalp whilst sitting down for a long period of time? Not ideal.
‘Instead go for a soft silk scrunchie as they are super soft and won’t cause kinks in your hair. if you prefer your whole hair out or your face a headband would be a good idea also, great if your planning to do a full on skincare routine also.’
For those who want an effortless, fresh blow-dry look when they step off the plane, she advises putting in hair rollers for instant volume during the flight.
Alternatively, heatless curlers can give a soft, salon look when you land.
Combat frizz and breakage with a 100% mulberry silk scrunchie. Ideal for tying up your hair comfortably while sleeping or relaxing during travel.
Keep your style intact on the go with this mulberry silk curler set. Just wrap damp hair before your flight and arrive with effortless waves – no heat or damage.
