British KFC fans are rejoicing after the fast food chain released a very unusual ice cream flavour inspired by one of its most popular menu items – but some have branded it ‘disgusting’.
Hackney Gelato teamed up with KFC to create the first-ever Gravy Gelato, transforming the chicken chain’s iconic sauce into a sweet treat.
Launched in May, adventurous foodies have been trying to get their hands on a tub of the gelato from the KFC website or online supermarkets but they are selling out quickly.
Created by Hackney Gelato co-founder and ‘chief gelatiere’ Enrico Pavoncelli, the £5.50 Gravy gelato has flavour hints of peppercorn and chicken.
The ice cream can be enjoyed on its own, dipped with fries or even on a piece of chicken.
While the crazy concoction has found many fans, others aren’t so sure – with some ice cream lovers branding the combination ‘disgusting’ and ‘revolting’.
Even Enrico himself thought he was on the receiving end of a prank when approached by KFC about the collaboration.
The chef is no stranger to experimenting with unorthodox flavour pairings having previously created gelato variations like wild garlic cream, smoked salmon and horseradish.

KFC and Hackney Gelato have teamed up to create a very unusual dessert using flavours of the chicken chain’s iconic gravy
‘Our recipe is a veggie ode to the Colonel’s iconic gravy. Made with a brown rice milk base and real gravy, this gelato takes you on a journey,’ the Hackney Gelato website reads.
‘Umami, herby, and savoury. Rich but creamy. It’s an experience like no other.’
Popular blogger Newfoodsuk managed to get their hands on a carton of the now-sold-out ice cream and shared their thoughts.
‘We were so eager to try this ice cream! It tasted just like KFC Gravy, herbs and spices, the lot!’ they said in a Facebook post.
‘It was kinda moreish, I’m not sure how, but it kinda worked!’
Followers were in disbelief that the savoury dessert came to be and while some were keen to try it for themselves, others weren’t convinced.
‘This sounds disgusting…but I want to try it,’ one foodie admitted.
‘What a revolting idea,’ a second said and another wrote: ‘Not me checking it wasn’t April 1st.’

‘Just because you can doesn’t mean you should,’ joked a fourth and another said: ‘Omg it’s actually real?! I thought it was another AI thing’.
Similarly, KFC’s announcement of the Gravy Gelato in mid-May prompted a flurry of mixed reactions from customers.
‘You know what, that’s two of my favourite things. Why not?’ one user said
‘Ok but wait why does this actually sound good on some fried chicken,’ a second added and another agreed: ‘Ok I’m interested’.
‘This is so depressing,’ someone chimed in.
‘This is the most British thing I have ever seen,’ one person laughed.
The Gravy Gelato went on sale on May 15 but quickly sold out. All proceeds were donated to the KFC Youth Foundation.
