It’s one of the biggest broadband providers in the UK, but BT experienced a three-hour outage today – leaving customers unable to access emails.
According to DownDetector, problems started just after 9:30am BST on Wednesday and affected more than 1,000 users across the UK.
Of those who reported issues, 50 per cent were having problems with email, 48 per cent with broadband and 2 per cent with landline.
Affected customers flooded to X (Twitter) to complain to the network provider – although the comms giant claims it is now fixed.
One person said: ‘@bt_uk Cannot access email on laptop – error code bmx_2xxx. Can access on phone as usual. Please explain.’
Another posted: ‘I can’t access on the web or on my mobile. Same error code coming up so clearly not just me with an issue.’
A third said: ‘@bt_uk your email isn’t working. On my phone, I can send messages but can’t attach pics despite permission being given to access them. On my pc I can’t access my email at all.’
It comes a day after rival Virgin Media suffered two outages in the space of 48 hours.

DownDetector gets network status updates from social media platforms, reports submitted to its website and other sources around the web.
It only reports an incident when the number of problem reports is significantly higher than the typical volume for that time of day.
The service reveals reports coming from all over the UK, from London to Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Nottingham, Cardiff, Glasgow and Belfast.
A BT spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘We are aware that some BT email customers are unable to access their email on webmail and via the app.
‘We’re urgently investigating the cause of this issue. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.’
At 2:20pm, the spokesperson said: ‘Earlier today some BT email customers were unable to access their email.
‘The issue has been resolved. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.’
On X (Twitter), the BT X account (@bt_uk) had been replying to customers tagging it for help.

‘Clearly not just me with an issue’: Broadband outages can be caused by faulty connection lines or a fault with internal systems run by the provider

In one reply it said: ‘We never want anyone to have issues with their service. We will always aim to fix anything ASAP.’
Another urged customers to phone its customer hotline (0330 1234 150), but at least some of those who have done so have reportedly been waiting a while.
One X user said: ‘I’ve been waiting for 45 minutes and counting for your guides to get back to me on ‘help’ because I can’t access my email.’
Another posted: ‘Apparently there is a central issue affecting ALL BT email accounts.’
BT customers can also enter their landline number on its official online page to find out the status of service in their area.
The chaos shortly follows similar issues at Virgin Media, which suffered an outage on Monday and another on Tuesday.
Virgin Media customers were especially frustrated at the timing of Monday’s incident because it stopped them from watching England’s cricket match against India in the Sky Sports app.
As part of a £31 monthly package, customers can watch Sky Sports through their Virgin Media broadband subscription.
