The Houston Texans have been hit with a crushing blow after Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon sustained a foot injury that could see him miss the start of the season.
The 29-year-old Mixon will miss ‘an extended period of time’ according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport and has had his foot in a walking boot.
But at present, it is unclear how Mixon hurt himself. He is on the ‘non-football injury list’ because the issue occured in the offseason and was not sustained through playing the game.
Mixon is expected to be revealuated closer to Week One, where the Texans start the season in Los Angeles against the Rams.
If Mixon is struggling to make the start of the season, it would be another significant loss for the Texans.
Wide receiver Tank Dell is expected to miss the entire campaign after sustaining a serious knee injury against Kansas City Chiefs last season that required multiple surgeries.

Joe Mixon is in a race against time to make Week One for the Texans against the LA Rams

Mixon was excellent for the Texans last season, recording over 1,000 yards for his team
Speaking about Dell on Saturday, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryan said: ‘Losing Tank was an emotional gut punch to everyone.
‘You see the manner he goes down, it was such a freak injury. It hurt our team, he was one of the top receivers, top playmakers. We definitely missed him going down the stretch.
‘He’s doing really great right now in his road to recovery. Outstanding attitude, he is attacking every day.’
That said, Ryan and the Texans organization are not yet putting a timetable on the return of the 25-year-old.
Ryan will be hoping that in Mixon’s case, a date for his return will soon a little more definitive.
The Texans, would later be knocked out of the playoffs by the Chiefs, host Tampa Bay Buccaneers second and then meet Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3.
