Voters in South Carolina and Pennsylvania gave mixed reviews of President Donald Trump‘s first six months of his second term, expressing concern over his tariff plans while praising his leadership and tax cuts.
The Daily Mail spoke to voters in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, and in Palmerton, Pennsylvania, as they gave their verdict on Trump’s policies over his first 200 days back in office.
There was some praise for the Republican and satisfaction with his no tax on tips provision included in the ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill.’
But many fretted over how they will be on the hook for increased prices due to Trump’s tariffs, which went into effect for most nations last week.
‘I think it’s been very poor,’ Charleston resident Bill told the Daily Mail about Trump’s performance.
‘I’m an economist, I teach economics at The Citadel, the tariffs are going to be horrible for us. Immigration is going to be terrible for us,’ he added. ‘It’s just simple economic theory.’
But not everyone was perturbed by the new import costs.
‘Overall, I agree with predominantly everything he’s doing,’ another South Carolina man, Trent, told the Daily Mail in an interview in downtown Charleston. ‘I agree with tariffs.’
‘If you agree with taxing businesses in the US, then you should be able to tax businesses bringing in products from foreign countries, and then lower corporate taxes in the US, and that would be a major offset for people buying US products.’
Trent said he hopes Trump continues to boldly make decisions without second-guessing himself and that the president’s gut instincts have, in his estimation, been the right ones.
‘If you’re going to implement something, stick with it and see it out. Don’t worry too much about how people are reacting to it.’
Jeff Minock, 48, a business manager living in Palmerton, Pennsylvania, told the Daily Mail he’s seeing ‘mixed results’ from Trump’s leadership.
‘I don’t feel any better or worse than I did during the prior term,’ he said.
Pennsylvania is a state crucial to Trump’s 2016 and 2024 election victories.
Annie, a woman in her twenties who works at an interior design firm, stressed the negative impacts of Trump’s tariffs on her business.
‘The tariffs affect us a lot because we run an interior design firm,’ she said. ‘The tariffs aren’t good for our business right now.’
Annie admitted that she has not felt a tangible impact of Trump’s work other than the increased importing fees.
‘He has done some good things,’ another woman, Sherry, said of Trump. ‘Social security, no tax on certain things, tips and stuff like that.’
Though she added many other parts of his presidency ‘overshadow’ those policies.
David told the Daily Mail he approves of Trump’s actions during his second 100 days, which ran out last week.
‘With everything happening in the world right now, he has a pretty good stance,’ he said. ‘I believe he’s a pretty strong leader.’
Others remained unconvinced that the president’s performance has been positive.
‘He’s been damaging the structure of American institutions,’ Charleston resident Rodney told the Daily Mail.
Maebelle said ‘time will tell’ if Trump’s work can be deemed helpful, but she added that so far, ‘I don’t see any good performance.’
