Dallas hunk Patrick Duffy and Happy Days star Linda Purl have revealed their secrets to longevity and ‘finding joy’ in later life.
Duffy, 76, became a reigning 1980s sex symbol on Dallas, sending viewers wild by baring his sculpted figure during the famous shower scene where his character Bobby Ewing was revealed to be alive after previously being killed off.
Meanwhile Purl, 69, won the hearts of American TV viewers in the same decade as Ashley, the girlfriend of Henry Winkler‘s character Fonzie on Happy Days.
Purl and Duffy have been romantically involved with one another since 2020 and are now starring as co-owners of a jazz club in the new movie Hollywood Grit.
In the run-up to their film’s release, they candidly discussed their workouts with the Daily Mail, with Duffy dishing that Purl ‘cannot sit still’ as she gushed that she finds her ‘joy’ in activities that foster a ‘connection to nature.’
Her fondness for outdoor activities has rubbed off on her former ‘gym rat’ boyfriend, who once found himself trekking up a mountainside with her just three days after undergoing a hip replacement – ‘with the doctor’s permission,’ he noted.

He observed that ‘Linda is reticent to say how much workout that she does do. She cannot sit still. Just before this, she was out climbing a mountain this morning. Wow.’
Duffy recalled: ‘I was sitting. So we covered both ends of that spectrum. I was happily sitting and she was happily traversing up the mountainside or she swims laps in the pool. She’s always working, always moving, always doing something physically.’
He joked that ‘it shows, it definitely shows for a woman who’s pushing 90, she looks great!’ prompting both him and Purl to burst out laughing.
‘I find it’s my joy,’ Purl explained. ‘It’s where certainly some healthy percentage of my joy is a connection to nature. I like to ski. I like to hike or bike ride. We’re in LA now, so there are fire trails everywhere and try to take advantage of those.’
She makes herself attend workout class even when she does not ‘really feel like going,’ and she has ‘never, not once been sorry that I did do the class or did hit a hill or something,’ Purl pointed out.
Duffy revealed that Purl has also ‘changed my basic lifestyle that way. I’ve had both hips replaced and quite literally about two days after I would get home, which was three days after having the hip replaced, I would be on the mountain side climbing a mountain with her, with the doctor’s permission.’
The doctor had advised him to ‘get out and walk,’ which Duffy initially interpreted as strolling ‘around the block on the sidewalk and no, no, no. We get in the car, we go to the base of a mountain and we get out and she encourages me to the extent.’
Duffy credits his girlfriend with his evolving ‘attitude’ to the way he works up a sweat, explaining: ‘I used to be a gym rat and not a cardio rat.’

Now his workout regimen has ‘changed, not enough, but I’m still in the learning process and I want to keep up. I want to maintain the mutual lifestyle of the great outdoors with her. So she’s been a great influence on me in that respect.’
Both of them are also scrupulous about staying hydrated, carrying around water bottles to ensure they drink their recommended ounces each day.
Duffy has found a knock-on health benefit resulting from all the water – the more he hydrates, the less alcohol he winds up consuming.
He and Purl have also managed to retain their youthful vitality thanks to the fact that they ‘laugh a lot,’ she shared. ‘We just do.’
She brought up the example of the late comedian George Burns, marveling that he lived to be 100 despite his penchant for whiskey and cigars.
‘So I think it was, who knows, genes, luck, resilience, but laughter. So that’s just something that’s a great part of our life,’ said Purl.
