Whether you’re an audiophile, a casual music and podcast listener or just enjoy jamming to the same playlist on repeat during your evening walks, a solid pair of wireless over-ear headphones is a worthwhile investment.
With so many options to choose from, it can get a bit overwhelming determining which one fits your lifestyle and preferences best.
So, to make your shopping experience a bit (or a lot) easier, we’ve done the vetting and listed the four best wireless over-ear headphones that our expert has tried and tested. Options from well-known brands like Sony, Sonos and Bowers & Wilkins make the cut, with some exceeding our expectations.
From a pair with up to 45 hours of battery life on a single charge to another that has the best noise-canceling performance of any brand we’ve tested, there are options here for everyone.
How we test
When testing headphones, we try them out for at least a week (usually longer), focusing on environmental and standardized sound, fit, connectivity to other devices and overall product packaging.
From testing if the noise-canceling technology is strong enough to drown out the sound of a plane engine or crying baby to how long it takes for different ear pads to negatively affect comfort, we’ve put it all to the test.

Four different brands of headphones in four different styles — find out which is best for you
We then compare the findings to determine how well each product performs so you can choose the best pair of wireless over-ear headphones for you.

These have been my go-to wireless over-ear headphones for well over three years now. While I’ve since tested options that were sturdier and pricier, I kept reaching for these since they’re the most well-rounded in design, performance and price.
Of all of the pairs I’ve tested, these fit the most comfortably and loosely on my ears (and my ears are pretty large). While I thought this would cause the headphones to move around or shift if I went for a jog or lied back, they stayed put while maintaining a secure but non-restricting fit.
The sound quality on these is also impressive. While the clarity can sometimes be a bit compromised, especially when compared to the Bowers & Wilkins Px8 , these Sony headphones excel in loud environments, especially when active noise cancelation is turned on. I even put them to the ultimate test on a few flights and they not only drowned out the ringing sound of the plane engine, but even overpowered the sound of a crying baby by about 90%.
If you’re looking for a pair of well-rounded, excellent over-ear headphones that will stand the test of time, these are my top recommendation.

These bad boys hold a special place in my heart since they were my first pair of wireless noise-canceling headphones that didn’t suck.
While they didn’t best the Sony and Bowers & Wilkins models I’ve tested in terms of sound performance and noise canceling technology, where they truly excelled is in battery life. The brand advertised that you get up to 45 hours on a single charge when active noise cancelation is turned off, and after putting that feature to the test, I can confirm that they’re not lying.
When first testing these over-ear headphones, I used them exclusively for five days in eight-hour daily intervals (give or take an hour or two), and the battery only dropped to under 10% after using them for a little over 43 hours, in total.
Impressive battery life aside, these headphones are also thoughtfully designed for easy portability. They collapse to fit into a pouch that doesn’t take up much space in your backpack, briefcase or personal item bag.
And like all of the headphones I’ve reviewed on this list, they also have a 35mm headphone jack and come with an accompanying cable, allowing you to use it in its wired state as well — a feature that comes in handy on planes!
3. Best design: Sonos Ace

-

What could be better
-
ExpensiveThough they’re incredibly well-made and come from a notable tech brand, they may be a bit pricey for some shoppers
-
Snug ear pads for large earsThough initially comfortable, the ear pads may be a bit too narrow for larger or wider ears

I had high hopes for this pair since Sonos is known for its sound performance with its well-reviewed and loved soundbars and Bluetooth speakers ranking at the top of expert lists (ours is coming soon)! And, based on my tests, my expectations were valid and met.
These headphones have a build that feels almost indestructible, but manages to remain lightweight and slim. In fact, it’s the slimmest pair of the bunch and doesn’t feel like you have a heavy weight of tech on your head. It’s also the second lightest of the bunch (the Sony WH-1000XM5 takes the cake for the lightest pair).
Where the Sonos Ace truly thrives is in its clear sound performance, and luxe design that’s neither too bold nor too minimal. They have a clean build that’s not overpowered by distracting branding or patterns, and it helps that they also look flattering on just about any head shape.
After three hours of constant wear, though, my ears began to feel a bit numb at the edges where the ear pads pressed against them. So if they were just a bit larger, they would have received a perfect rating.
It’s worth mentioning that these also come in my favorite travel case of the bunch since it’s the slimmest and hardest. The seamless Sonos app also makes pairing with your phone and other devices a breeze.

It’s rare that a pair of headphones scores high marks in both sound performance and design, but the Px8 is one of the few that easily passes both tests — and then some — with flying colors.
I call these the Porsche of headphones. They’re luxurious and have a timeless design, but those aesthetic factors don’t come at the expense of the sound quality and best-in-class noise-cancelation technology.
The Px8 also boasts some of the best noise-cancelation that money can buy. I tested this all-star feature while sitting one row behind two crying toddlers on a flight and once activated, I heard nothing — literally nothing . No outside sounds slipped through at all.
That theme of excellence continues through the premium materials used to create these headphones. Genuine Nappa leather is the main material used to create this beauty.
Of course, that lends to a heftier price tag when compared to other models, making this a definite splurge, but it’s one that you won’t regret if you’re a constant headphone user.
Our verdict

The Bowers & Wilkins Px8s have the best ear pad cushioning and sturdiest build of the bunch
If I were to buy any of the over-ear headphones on this list, I would go with the Bowers & Wilkins Px8. Though they’re the priciest of the bunch, they excel in so many areas — some of which other options on the list fall short.
If noise-cancelation quality and performance ranks highest on your list of priorities, these are top of the line and carry out this feature best out of the products listed. While reviewing this pair, the price was the only setback I found that would be a possible deterrent for shoppers.
But if that $699 sale price is too hefty for you, the Sony WH-1000XM5 is a suitable runner up that will surely give you so much bang for your buck. While the design isn’t as luxe and life-proof as that of the Px8, it’s the only one on this list that comes closest to the powerhouse noise-cancelation performance of the Bowers & Wilkins pair.

FAQs
What brand has the best over-ear headphones?
Based on my experience in testing headphones over the years, Sony has the most diverse range of over-ear headphones that are worth buying at all price points. The brand is also known for boasting some of the most competitive noise-canceling technologies in the industry.
From the WH-1000XM5 pair mentioned in this story to the bass-centric ULT Wear headphones that pack a punch for music listening and DJing, Sony’s over-ear headphones range has been one of the most consistent and thorough for years.

Our expert, Moriba, testing and reviewing the Best Overall pair: the Sony WH-1000XM5
What are the most comfortable over-ear headphones for all-day use?
When looking for over-ear headphones for extended wear, look for a pair that has well-padded and cushioned ear cuffs. Based on my years of testing headphones, the pairs with the roomiest ear pads are the most comfortable to wear, and, on this list, the Sony WH-1000XM5 and Bowers & Wilkins Px8 come out on top.
I’ve worn both pairs consistently for over eight hours on multiple occasions, and they’re two of the few that don’t feel restricting on my ears or head.

Are headphones better in-ear or over-ear?
This is a matter of personal preference, but many listeners and headphone users who prefer to avoid putting headphones inside their ears (i.e. the necessary way to wear in-ear headphones), opt, instead, for over-ear headphones since they’re less obstructive.
I’ve found in my years of testing both headphone types that over-ears tend to give you a more well rounded sound since the ear pads surround your entire ear, giving the noise-canceling feature a real chance to shine. With in-ear headphones, outside sound has a higher chance of disrupting your listening experience since there is not a physical barrier helping to keep that sound from entering.
