A Philadelphia man has been arrested for a mobster’s murder as old TV news footage emerged of him telling a reporter he feared for his family’s safety following the slaying.
Richard Leidy, 60, was arrested in relation to the murder of 42-year-old Gino Marconi who was gunned down on April 10, 1999.
Marconi succumbed to his injuries one day after the shooting, while his 31-year-old girlfriend Patricia Miley, who was shot three times, survived.
Leidy’s arrest on Monday, 26 years later, comes as footage from Fox News showed an interview with the accused killer.
His home had been invaded in a robbery in February, just two months before Marconi’s murder.
Leidy told the reporter that men had broken in looking for money and threatened to kill him, holding a gun to his chest and forcing him to the ground.
‘I’m concerned for my family’s safety and mine, sure,’ Leidy told Fox 29 reporter Dave Scratweiser at the time.
Police had investigated whether Marconi had been involved in the robbery and therefore if he had been killed by Leidy in revenge.

Leidy’s home had been broken into just two months before Marconi’s murder, which police suspected may have been linked to the shooting
Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore told the Inquirer that he remembered the robbery as well as Marconi’s murder, and that Leidy had been a suspect but there hadn’t been enough evidence to make an arrest.
How Leidy was eventually connected to the murder remains unclear.
Vanore said the combined efforts of Philadelphia homicide detectives, FBI investigators, and prosecutors with the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office led to Leidy’s arrest.
Marconi had been a low-level associate of the then-reputed Philadelphia mob boss Joseph ‘Skinny Joey’ Merlino, police said at the time.
He and Miley were ambushed outside of Marconi’s home, where he was shot once in the head.
The gunman, said to have been waiting for the pair to emerge, set his van on fire, reportedly with the gun inside, as well as other vehicles outside of Marconi’s home, ABC News reported.
Police said, at the time, that Marconi had been targeted in the shoot out.
Leidy has been charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm, possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle/other vehicles.
The accused killer is being held in federal custody without bail.
He was arraigned on Tuesday and has yet to enter a plea. Leidy is due to appear next in court for a preliminary hearing on September 15, his 61st birthday.
