Many Aussies who grew up in the 90s have nostalgic memories of family outings to the Pizza Hut buffet.
People fondly recall elements like the all-you-can-eat pizza, pasta and salad bar, the refillable soft drink station and of course, the build-your-own ice cream sundaes for dessert.
But now, it has been revealed that Pizza Hut wasn’t the only major fast food chain to offer a buffet banquet.
It turns out, select KFC stores also offered them.
A recent Reddit post reminisced about the forgotten KFC eateries, with hundreds of Aussies fondly reflecting on their family outings.
Posting in the subreddit ‘Australian Nostalgia’, a poster shared an old, grainy photograph of one of the fried chicken buffet restaurants.
‘Forget Pizza Hut, bring back the KFC buffet,’ the caption read.
The sheer existence of KFC buffets blew the minds of many Australians, many of whom had no idea such a thing ever existed.

A grainy old photograph of an Australian KFC buffet from the 90s was shared to Reddit – and it blew the minds of Aussies who had no idea such venues previously existed
‘THEY HAD A BUFFET!?!?’ read one astonished reply.
‘When? Where? Did all KFCs have it? I literally did not know about this,’ read part of the top most upvoted reply.
‘Seriously always thought this was an urban legend,’ read another stunned response.
One agreed that they had a clear recollection of visiting other all-you-can-eat 90s restaurants like Pizza Hut, as well as Smorgys and Sizzler – ‘but not KFC’.
However several commenters chimed in to confirm that there were indeed select KFC establishments around Australia that offered the all you can eat buffet in the 1990s.
Those lucky enough to have visited one recalled that they offered an endless bounty of various varieties of fried chicken, mountains of chips and endless drinks.
‘My local KFC had the buffet when I was a kid. Legit the best thing ever!’ they reminisced.
‘Take me back to the popcorn chicken pyramids.’
Others named specific locations where they’d previously visited a KFC buffet.

The Reddit thread sparked nostalgic recollections from people who had previously visited the ‘urban legend’ KFC buffets, with people recalling helping themselves to copious amounts of fried chicken
These included Dandenong in Melbourne, Eagle Street in Brisbane, Carlingford Court in Sydney, Penrith in Greater Sydney, Hunter Street in Newcastle and a number of locations around Perth including Cannington, Armadale and Maylands.
Another looked back on a ‘memorable’ KFC eat-a-thon outing with mixed feelings.
‘When I was 13 I did KFC all you can eat and I literally ate all I could. It started coming back up and I had to sit real still with a mouthful of food,’ they recounted.
’10 mins before I could get up and slowly walk out of the place. Memorable meal, I think it was only $6.’
This was a common sentiment about the KFC buffet, with another agreeing that they ‘ate myself crook several times’.
When some commenters lamented about the closure of these buffets, many noted that they simply weren’t a financially viable business – particularly since many customers would take excessive amounts of food.
‘At these [KFC buffets] and the Pizza Hut ones, people were animals,’ read one response. ‘No surprise they got killed off.’
‘That’s why they got rid of them, they were literally bleeding money,’ another person explained.
‘My mate used to grab the chicken, eat the skin, then chuck the chicken in the pot plant and then get more. No wonder they stopped them,’ another added.
Another person agreed saying they would even sneak in ‘tupperware containers’ and ‘load up’.
However, KFC lovers who are willing to travel abroad to try the legendary chicken buffet can still satiate their appetites.
