An NRL WAG has opened up about a devastating setback she experienced on her journey to motherhood.
Tayla Montoya, who is married to Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs star Marcelo Montoya, revealed she experienced a rare complication while trying to have a baby.
The mother of twins said she wanted to share her story to shed light on an issue that affects only one per cent of Australian women.
Speaking candidly, she described the heartbreak of learning her pregnancy was not progressing as expected.
Montoya said the experience was unlike the common miscarriages doctors often reference, and it left her searching for answers.
‘Normally when you have a miscarriage, there’s a lot that doctors can’t tell you, [about] what happened,’ she said.

The mother of twins Tiana and Milan, Tayla reflected on the frightening pregnancy scare that nearly forced chemotherapy to protect her health

Married to Bulldogs star Marcelo Montoya, Tayla shared her ordeal with fans, explaining the frightening discovery of a molar pregnancy

Doctors discovered Tayla had a rare partial molar pregnancy, where two sperm fertilised one egg, causing abnormal tissue growth
‘You’ll get a generic answer like ‘this is very common’, like ‘one in four women have it’.
‘And you’re kinda like, well that doesn’t help me sleep at night.
‘But luckily for me, I got the surgery to remove the tissue and they were able to test it and find out that it was kind like a weird, weird, very rare pregnancy.
‘So two sperm went into the one egg, so it was a partial molar pregnancy. It happens in one per cent of pregnancies, so it’s extremely rare.’
Tayla said she was lucky that she chose the surgery, because leaving it could have had major impacts on her health.
‘So what happens, it’s got triple the amount of chromosomes as to what is needed,’ she said.
‘Because it’s formed an abnormal cyst, is pretty much what they called it, it can continue to grow if all of it wasn’t removed.
‘And to get rid of it, you need chemotherapy.

The young mum explained how surgery revealed the rare complication, sparing her chemotherapy that could have followed incomplete removal

Fans praised Tayla for courageously speaking out, using her platform to raise awareness about the dangers of molar pregnancies
‘I had to go for weekly blood tests to make sure my HCG was lowering, because if it wasn’t, then that would show my body would still think I was pregnant and growing this abnormal tissue.
‘Then we would’ve had to go through chemotherapy.’
It comes after Tayla previously spoke out against the ‘mummy vlogger’ trend.
Other mothers and women trying to start a family praised Tayla for speaking about her experiences to bring awareness to partial molar pregnancies.
‘Finally! Someone’s talking about this – I just had this and am going through the weekly blood tests now. Thank you for bringing this up and spreading awareness,’ one commented.
Another said: ‘I’m part of the 1%. I’ve never seen this being talked about and it’s awful. Thanks for bringing awareness.’
She explained on The Montoyas podcast that she is constantly being shown videos of mothers filming themselves while their newborns cry.
As a mother of twin girls, Tiana and Milan, she said she found the behaviour confusing and unsettling.
Tayla shared that during the hardest newborn stages, grabbing a camera would be the last thing on her mind.
She argued that turning a crying baby into part of a social media ‘brand’ felt wrong.
Her husband Marcelo agreed with her take, saying the world had ‘lost the plot.’
