In 1998, Charlie Sheen‘s spiral into addiction prompted his famous father Martin Sheen to pull a desperate move by literally signing his son’s arrest warrant.
The 60-year-old nepo baby was already on probation for allegedly battering girlfriend Brittany Ashland, so when he suffered a stroke after overdosing on injected cocaine and then attempted to escape rehab, the 83-year-old Emmy winner had enough.
‘It felt like the biggest betrayal you could possibly endure,’ Charlie recalled on Good Morning America on Monday.
‘[I] saw it as love eventually. But in the moment, it’s like in the book when my bodyguard comes to the bedroom door and he says, “You know, the US marshals are on the way. We’re leaving in five.”‘
However, Malibu Municipal Court judge Lawrence Mira ruled to ‘err on the side of rehabilitation’ rather than put Sheen (born Carlos Estévez) behind bars, so he extended his probation by one year – the Daily News reported.
Concerned Martin had first staged an intervention to get his youngest son clean and sober at age 24 in 1990, but he admitted on GMA: ‘It’s hard to ask for help when somebody else has raised your hand for you.’

In Andrew Renzi’s two-part docuseries AKA Charlie Sheen – premiering this Wednesday on Netflix – Charlie broke down in tears recalling the pain he caused his father: ‘I can’t imagine being my dad. I really hurt the people I love.’
When Sheen was asked what the Apocalypse Now alum thought of his tell-all The Book of Sheen: A Memoir – dropping this Tuesday – he said: ‘Dad was like halfway through it. He said, “Your use of humor in your darkest moments is a gift to the reader” is how he described it.’
The former Hollywood bad boy now believes all of his addiction issues stemmed from his stuttering.
‘Drinking just softened the edges,’ Charlie noted. ‘It gave me just freedom of speech.’
After several publicly-reported relapses, Sheen is nearly eight years sober.
‘This story should’ve ended 100 times 20 years ago, and it didn’t. And it didn’t,’ the self-described ‘tabloid black hole’ explained.
‘So whatever happens next might be just where some of the real gold has been hidden, you know?’
Last Friday, the same ABC morning show showed a clip of Charlie confessing that he suffered ‘a tremendous amount of extortion’ trying to silence blackmailers who knew of his crack-fueled sex sessions with men.
As for his shocking HIV diagnosis in 2015, Sheen said ‘that was a tremendous relief. I feel pretty good.’
But GMA did not ask the Golden Globe winner about Corey Feldman’s shocking accusations that Charlie had raped his Lucas co-star Corey Haim, at age 13, which he previously denied.
Last Thursday, Charlie raised eyebrows at the premiere of AKA Charlie Sheen by posing with his third ex-wife Denise Richards for the first time nearly 20 years after their divorce.

‘We both looked at each other on the red carpet and just laughed,’ the 54-year-old Bond Girl wrote on Instagram Friday.
‘Charlie asked, “Is it 2002?” and I said, “It sure feels like it.” Who would have thought?
What a journey we’ve had – so many ups and downs. But when life gets tough, deep down we both know we can count on each other. I’m so proud of him, and truly honored he asked me to be part of his story. Congrats, Charles!’
AKA Charlie Sheen also includes interviews with Brooke Mueller, Lola Sheen, Ramón Estévez, Sean Penn, Heidi Fleiss, Chuck Lorre, Jon Cryer, Chris Tucker, and his former drug dealer Marco.
But the doc will not include Martin, Sheen’s eldest brother Emilio Estévez, nor his estranged 21-year-old daughter Sami Sheen.
‘I feel like as long as everybody’s still in the game, there’s always a shot for better tomorrow, you know?’ the four-time Emmy nominee said of Sami.
‘I don’t really know what I did. That’s the problem. I don’t know what I’m supposed to apologize for. But I have absolute faith that it’s not a forever thing. And [she] and I will work it out. You know, we have a history of that. That’s too valuable to let some moment destroy all of that.’
