Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett threw cold water on Donald Trump’s dreams for a third-term in the White House.
During an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier, the 53-year-old Trump-appointed justice said the 22nd Amendment’s two term limit is cut and dry.
The amendment, which became the law of the land in 1951 after being ratified by three-quarters of U.S. states, says, ‘No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.’
The conversation started when Barrett claimed the ‘genius’ of the Constitution is that it includes broad and specific protections for individual liberties.
‘We have freedom of speech, and to have freedom of speech doesn’t mean that you have freedom only to pass out pamphlets on a town square,’ she told Baier. ‘It means you have freedom to be on broadcast news.’
‘Right, and the 22nd Amendment says you can only run for office for two terms,’ Baier replied.
‘True,’ Barrett said before the Fox Host asked her, ‘You think that’s cut-and-dried?’
‘Well, you know, that’s what the amendment says, right? You know, after FDR had four terms, that’s what that amendment says,’ she concluded.

Trump has repeatedly suggested there are ways for him to run again in 2028
Barrett’s comments come after the president has repeatedly suggested he would run again after his term ends in 2028 despite constitutional limitations.
Back in March, Trump claimed during an interview with NBC News that ‘a lot of people’ want him to run again.
‘There are methods which you could do it, as you know,’ Trump said despite previously denying interest in seeking a third-term.
Steve Bannon has claimed Trump could bypass the limitations of the Constitution by running as vice president.
Hypothetically after winning the election, the presidential nominee would step aside to give Trump the keys to the White House again.
‘I’m a firm believer that President Trump will run and win again in 2028, so I’ve already endorsed President Trump,’ Bannon told NewsNation in March.
‘A man like this comes along once every century, if we’re lucky. We’ve got him now.”
The 22nd Amendment was passed in 1947 following the death of President Franklin Roosevelt who won four elections from 1932 to 1944.

Barrett noted that the 22nd Amendment limits presidents from running after a second-term in office
The White House has previously claimed Trump is joking when he discusses another term, and is not seriously considering it.
During a prior interview with CBS News, Barrett again pointed to the 22nd Amendment when asked about Trump staying in the White House past his second term.
‘If you ask the question how many terms a president can serve, I would point to the 22nd amendment,’ she said.
