A second suspect has been released in the chaotic aftermath of the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, FBI Director Kash Patel announced.
Kirk, 31, was shot at 12.20pm during a rally at Utah Valley University by a gunman who was caught on camera dashing across a rooftop in the moments after he opened fire.
Terrified screams erupted as the Turning Point USA founder toppled from his chair after the shots rang out.
He was then rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, as an elderly man was taken into custody.
Authorities have since learned that the man who was taken into custody in the immediate aftermath, 71-year-old George Zinn, was not the shooter. Another man who was taken into custody and questioned by police was also released.
FBI agents are now working with the local police to track down the killer, as Utah Gov. Spencer Cox suggested the murderer may face the death penalty.

‘Where I was at, in the group of counterprotesters, there was actually some excitement, some people that were seen to be celebrating,’ he told BBC NewsNight.

Witnesses describe scene
Witnesses at Charlie Kirk’s rally on Wednesday have described the disturbing moment he was fatally shot.
Henry Dels, a 24-year-old businessman from the area, told ABC News that he was standing about 25 feet from Kirk when he was shot.
‘It seemed like a waterfall of blood was gushing out of him, it was gushing out of his neck and running down his shoulder and onto his left pec,’ Dels said.
‘I immediately knew he was going to die.’
Danielle, a student at Brigham Young University who attended the event, also told ABC News’ Salt Lake City affiliate station KTVX that she was close to where Kirk was speaking when he was shot.
‘You just see his neck just, like, open up and there’s just, like, so much blood that just came out. I was 15 feet away, and it was really hard to witness,’ she said.
Danielle then recounted hearing screaming and dpeople running in the aftermath.
‘I’m Iike, it’s not safe to run. It’s not safe to get up,’ Danielle said, adding that she started to pray, ‘Please, God, please God, please God, because I don’t want to die.’
UVU student Luke Pitman, who also witnessed the shooting, told KTVX he was left in ‘total shock.’
‘We all heard a shooting, like a big bang,’ Pitman said. ‘We thought it was confetti. Then, everyone started ducking down. And then, I look over at Charlie Kirk and I see blood coming from his neck.’
FBI sets up tip line for information
The FBI has set up a digital tip line for any information about the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk.

‘We heard a big loud shot, I saw a bunch of blood come out of Charlie, I saw his body kind of kick back and go limp, and everybody dropped to the ground,’ Hickens said.
‘I kind of turned around and all of a sudden I saw officers walking with this very elderly gentleman with white hair.
‘They had him arrested, they had him on his knees and he was screaming about his rights and all that stuff. They cuffed him and put him away.’
Witness recalls moment Charlie Kirk was shot
Sophie Anderson, 45, who was standing 100 feet from the stage when the shooting happened, told the Daily Mail that she almost got trampled as she ran off into the food court where she hid in a closet.
‘The second it happened, I knew it was a gunshot,’ said Anderson, who was joined at the event by her boss Phil Lyman, a former Utah state representative who was handing out hats on stage with Kirk just five minutes earlier.
‘He was shot in the neck and just fell over and he was just a fountain of blood,’ she said. ‘They carried him off. All these kids are just falling apart and balling.’
A suspect is in custody, reports say

‘A single shot was fired on campus toward a visiting speaker. Police are investigating now, suspect in custody,’ an alert from UVU said, according to the Deseret News.
Police have not revealed the suspect’s identity but footage from the scene showed officers taking an older man into custody.

A spokeswoman for Utah Valley University, Ellen Treanor, told the New York Times that Kirk was struck by a suspect who had fired from the Losee Center, a building about 200 yards away.
