A beloved Sydney dumpling house has shocked loyal diners by announcing it will close its doors at the end of the month.
Mr Yip, on Military Road in Neutral Bay, has been serving handmade dim sum since 2021 under the steady hand of owner and dumpling master Kirk Yip.
After a decade honing his craft in Hong Kong and Singapore, Yip moved to Sydney and worked at Lotus Dining under celebrated chef Chris Yan before striking out on his own.
The team broke the news in a heartfelt Instagram post.
‘We would like to sincerely thank you for your support of Mr Yip Dumpling. Due to family reasons, we will be closing our business at the end of this month.
‘Sunday, September 28 will be our last day of service. Until then, we will continue to prepare every meal with care and dedication, and we warmly invite you to visit us once again.’
The announcement left diners devastated.
For years, Mr Yip has built a cult following for its xiao long bao, snow mountain BBQ pork buns and purple sweet potato pastries, drawing food lovers from across Sydney.

‘Hands down one of the best dim sum places we’ve tried. Authentic, delicious, great service,’ one reviewer wrote.
Another said, ‘The handmade soup dumplings are so good, soup is flavorful and juicy … It’s rare to find thin xiao long baos because that’s really a skill to roll it that thin and not break.’
Others raved about the ‘juicy little flavour bombs’ of siu mai, duck fried rice that scored ’11/10,’ and service that made the restaurant feel like a second home.
For some, Mr Yip was more than just dinner – it became a weekly ritual.
‘I’ve gone to Mr Yip for about three years now and it has become my favourite restaurant in Sydney,’ one loyal customer wrote.
The closure of Mr Yip comes as another Neutral Bay institution, Green Sprouts Vegan Chinese Restaurant, served its final yum cha on August 31.
Green Sprouts became a cult favourite for its Hong Kong–style vegan yum cha, complete with roaming dim sum carts and a menu that won over both vegans and meat eaters.
Some diners became emotional recalling their favourite dishes, from the famed turnip cakes to the mango custard buns, black sesame balls, bean curd rolls, and vegan duck pancakes.

Locals say the loss of Mr Yip and Green Sprouts will leave Military Road ‘a little emptier’ – and a whole lot less delicious
One regular said the restaurant had been their ‘go-to for every birthday and special occasion’ and praised the food as ‘better than the real thing.’
The twin closures follow a string of high-profile Sydney hospitality casualties in 2025.
In June, Manly Wharf staples Saké and El Camino Cantina shut after 15 years on their lease.
Darlinghurst’s Lankan Filling Station will soon call time after seven years, with chef-owner O Tama Carey describing the decision as ‘the end of an era.’
