Canelo Alvarez handed over £100MILLION payday to face Terence Crawford
Canelo Alvarez will earn over £100million when he steps into the ring with Terence Crawford this evening – the richest guarantee ever for a Mexican athlete.
The staggering figure was revealed by Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of the country’s General Entertainment Authority, who has bankrolled the kingdom’s takeover of elite boxing.
Asked at Thursday’s final press conference whether Alvarez was guaranteed to make £100million from the fight, Alalshikh didn’t hesitate.
‘No, you’ve got the number wrong… it’s more than that’, he said with a smile on his face.
The fight marks the second bout in a blockbuster three-fight deal between Alalshikh and Alvarez, following the Mexican’s routine points win over William Scull earlier this year.
Ryan Garcia questions Canelo Alvarez’s ‘intensity’ ahead of Terence Crawford clash
Ryan Garcia has cast doubt over Canelo Alvarez’s ability to rise to the occasion against Terence Crawford, questioning whether the Mexican superstar still has the same fire that defined his prime years.
Speaking on Inside the Ring, the former WBC interim lightweight champion delivered a candid assessment of Canelo’s recent performances.
He insisted that the undisputed super middleweight king may no longer be able to summon the relentless drive that once made him one of boxing’s most feared fighters.
‘My problem with Canelo is his intensity,’ Garcia said. ‘He doesn’t have the same intensity that he used to have, and I think that’s gonna be the biggest issue for me.
‘Can he still counterpunch? Yes. Can he still be slick? Yes. But does he have the energy and the intensity that he used to have when he was younger, or even when he fought Caleb Plant?’
Canelo vs Crawford: The keys to VICTORY for both fighters | Big Fight Focus
Where will this fight be won and lost?
Canelo is the natural super middleweight, comfortable at 168 and carrying serious power. His style relies on forward pressure and counterpunching, mixing head and body shots to break opponents down. If he traps Crawford, he can do serious damage.
Crawford is moving up two divisions, but he brings elite boxing IQ, adaptability, and a dangerous southpaw stance. He’ll need to control distance, move laterally, frustrate Canelo, and pick his moments to counter without getting caught.
Bottom line: Canelo’s size and power give him an edge, but Crawford’s skill, timing, and ring smarts make him a real threat. How do you see it – size or skill winning the day?

Okay but why are they taking the fight?
Why are Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford stepping into the ring? For Canelo, it’s about legacy. He’s already undisputed at super middleweight and one of Mexico’s all-time greats, but taking on a pound-for-pound master like Crawford is a chance to prove he welcomes any challenge. A win reinforces his dominance; a loss, especially against a smaller fighter, would be a major dent in his resume.
For Crawford, it’s the ultimate opportunity. Already the first male fighter in the four-belt era to be undisputed in two divisions, a victory over Canelo would make him a three-division undisputed champ and push him into all-time great territory.
This fight is about more than belts or money – it’s about legacy, history, and proving who truly stands at the top.

Let’s compare their resumes…
When comparing Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford, it’s clear both are among the best of their era – just in different ways.
Canelo, Mexico’s golden boy, has conquered four weight classes and unified all four super-middleweight belts, facing a huge array of elite opponents over a long career. Yes, he’s lost to Mayweather and Bivol, but his legacy is defined by his dominance, longevity, and global superstar status.
Crawford’s path is different but no less impressive. Undefeated and historically unique, he’s the first man in the four-belt era to become undisputed in two divisions. His knockouts over champions like Kell Brook, Shawn Porter, and Errol Spence Jr. showcase his precision, power, and fight-ending ability.
In short: Canelo represents global superstardom and versatility; Crawford represents perfection and ruthlessness. Tonight, two distinct roads to greatness collide in one ring.
It all began in 2023, right after Terence Crawford’s dominant win over Errol Spence Jr. to become the undisputed welterweight champion. Almost immediately, Crawford dropped a bombshell idea: what if he fought Canelo Alvarez, maybe at a catchweight of 158 or 160 pounds? Canelo dismissed it quickly, pointing out the significant size difference.
But Crawford didn’t let it go. He kept pushing, persistent as ever, and soon he wasn’t talking about a catchweight anymore – he was ready to move all the way up to super middleweight. That’s when the conversation shifted from pipe dream to something fans started to believe could actually happen.
Enter Saudi Arabia. Turki Alalshikh, the man behind several recent mega-fights, made it his mission to bring this matchup to life.
There was one bump in the road. In early 2025, rumors emerged that Canelo might be negotiating a fight with Jake Paul. Paul himself stoked the hype, claiming a deal was nearly done. But ultimately, Canelo passed on that and signed a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia, with Crawford included on the list.
The fight finally felt real after Canelo’s victory over William Scull. It wasn’t the most memorable performance – he looked flat at times – but the moment Crawford stepped into the ring for their first face-off, fans knew it was official.
And now, here we are: September 13, 2025, Las Vegas. Crawford chasing history, Canelo agreeing to the challenge, and Saudi backing making it happen. The result? One of the biggest fights of this era.

Crawford’s best performance: Errol Spence Jr
Crawford put on a technical clinic, flooring his biggest rival three times en route to a ninth-round stoppage. While Spence later underwent cataract surgery and had been managing a detached retina from a 2021 sparring injury, that does little to diminish Crawford’s outstanding performance. His counterpunching throughout the fight was truly remarkable.
Earlier, knockout victories over former welterweight champions Kell Brook and Shawn Porter had already boosted Crawford’s reputation through 2020 and 2021. But it was his win over Spence that cemented his status at the top of the division, earning him the undisputed welterweight crown.

Canelo’s last night…
While Canelo’s two career losses to Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol stand out, his most uninspiring performance actually came in a fight he still won comfortably earlier this year.
In a lackluster display, Canelo easily secured a one-sided decision over John Ryder (Scull) to reclaim the undisputed super middleweight titles. He landed just 152 punches over 12 rounds, marking one of the quietest offensive outputs in CompuBox’s 40-year history.
Rather than signaling any decline, the subdued showing was likely strategic -Canelo did just enough to win while conserving energy and preparing for his face-off with Terence Crawford, which took place in the ring shortly after the fight.
