It’s not every day that one of the world’s most famous chefs singles out a tiny Sydney cafe as his go-to breakfast spot, but that’s exactly what Rick Stein has done.
The British celebrity chef, who spends part of the year in Australia, revealed that Avenue Road Cafe in Mosman is one of his favourite places to eat when he’s in town.
‘Where can you not get a good coffee in Sydney? I love a flat white, and there’s this place called Avenue Road in Mosman we go to all the time,’ he told Good Food.
‘Every time I go there, I have a large flat white, an orange juice and scrambled eggs and bacon on sourdough. That’s my order, and it’s just always busy, always packed and really efficiently run.’
Tucked away in Mosman Village at 185 Avenue Road, the café has long been a local favourite but Stein’s seal of approval has cemented its reputation as one of Sydney’s must-visit brunch spots.
Open daily from 6am, it’s the kind of place that caters to everyone – early risers grabbing a takeaway flat white, families meeting after a trip to Balmoral Beach, or friends lingering over hotcakes and hash browns.
The menu changes seasonally, with specials rotating alongside tried-and-true classics.
Ricotta hotcakes, Himalayan hash with halloumi, and the signature ‘Halloumi Heights’ toast stacked with avocado, mushrooms, spinach, poached egg and house-made tomato relish have all earned cult status.

Lunch plates also push beyond standard café fare, with options like crispy chicken coleslaw on waffles or chicken tikka salad with quinoa and fresh veggies.
Locals rave about the café’s food and atmosphere.
‘A hidden gem of culinary delights,’ one review read, praising both the ricotta hotcakes and the chicken tikka salad.
Another diner wrote, ‘Yes, it’s a bit pricey, but no more so than other places in the area, and it’s absolutely worth it. The food is delicious, a little more original, beautifully presented, and filling.’
For many Mosman residents, Avenue Road has become a weekend ritual.
‘We had Benny Boi and Halloumi Heights and now we understand why this place is so popular,’ one customer said, noting the generous portions.
Another admitted it took them far too long to try the café but that they’d ‘definitely be back’ after their first visit.
With its prime spot in Mosman Village, buzzing atmosphere, and a menu that manages to be both creative and comforting, it’s easy to see why Stein has made Avenue Road part of his Sydney routine.
Whether you’re a local, a visitor, or a world-renowned chef, the appeal of good coffee, fresh food and the hum of a busy café is universal.
