Sir Elton John has revealed how he left his doctor ‘startled’ with a bizarre request before undergoing surgery.
The musician, 78, has had both knees replaced in recent years, as well his right hip following a fall, which forced him delay his farewell tour in 2021.
Speaking in his documentary, Touched By Gold, explained how he turned his old kneecap into a piece of jewellery with the help of designer Theo Fennell.
Joining Theo, Elton discussed the process and admitted that the necklace looks a bit like an ‘old artifact from Egypt.’
He explained: ‘When I had my kneecaps removed, the left one first and then the right, I asked my surgeon if I could keep the kneecaps, which he was rather startled about.
‘We had to bake them to dry them out,’ Theo added. ‘Then they get raw like pumice stone, they’re very porous, and so we had to paint them with acetate and then just polish them up.’

Elton continued: ‘My surgeon said I had the worst knees he’s ever operated on. That hole was actually in my kneecap. It looks a bit like an old artifact from Egypt.’
Theo revealed that he inscribed the words ‘I will no longer bow to any man,’ on the back before joking: ‘Which of course you can’t do with a kneecap missing.’
Elton turned heads back in October when he first wore his old kneecap as a necklace to the premiere of his new biopic Never Too Late at the American Express Gala during the London Film Festival.
He teamed his smart brown suit with the unique jewellery which had been polished and trimmed with gold.
The musical legend joked at the NYC screening of the biopic: ‘To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left’.
‘I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate. I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee.
‘In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip. But I’m still here. And I can’t thank you [enough], you’re the people that made me.’
Last year, it was revealed that Sir Elton has been left with limited vision in one eye after battling a ‘severe eye infection.’

The hitmaker, who played his final shows in the summer of 2023, explained how he has spent the past few months ‘recuperating at home.’
In a lengthy post on Instagram, Elton shared: ‘Over the summer, I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye.
‘I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.
‘I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks.’
Elton concluded: ‘I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far.’
Although retiring from touring last year he did perform at his star-studded Oscar party in March last year.
