Spice bags have been the centre of attention among foodies online for some time, and now Britons can enjoy the dish at Wetherspoons.
The Chinese-inspired meal, made of seasoned fried chicken, chips, vegetables, and curry sauce, is rumoured to hail from Sunflower, a Chinese takeaway that served the dish off the menu and to staff only from 2006 onwards.
The secret recipe soon leaked across Dublin, and last year, the Spice Bag Meal Deal from the nearby Xian Street Food made it to Deliveroo’s top ten trending dishes globally, according to The Times.
Soon enough, chefs around the country caught wind of the dish and its popularity, with late-night takeaways in London making moves to incorporate containers filled with the salty, spicy meal on their menus.
Now, Wetherspoons has joined the trend and is selling the dish, and their version includes chicken strips and chicken breast bites, tossed in a salt and chilli Chinese-style spice mix, with red onion, sliced chillies, and coriander.
Wetherspoon’s food-development manager, Sarah Shaw, said: ‘We are always keen to offer customers the widest range of meals.
‘The spice bag has proven extremely popular with customers in Ireland – and we are confident that it will also be well received by customers in pubs throughout England, Scotland and Wales.’
Despite the dish only being introduced on the menu last week, it’s already caused a storm online, with one person claiming that the £8.99 plate was the ‘best meal’ he’s ever had at the chain.

Wetherspoons have introduced as new dish inspired by the famous spice bag – and one used called Callum Ryan (pictured) from the UK gave it a rave review
Talking to TikTok, content creator Callum Ryan recorded the first time he tried the dish, and said it came to his table ‘looking unreal’.
‘Honestly, I was shocked,’ he said, continuing, ‘If I’m being 100 per cent honest, this is the best meal I’ve ever had in ‘Spoons.
‘The chicken was crispy and crunchy, the chips had a perfect kick, and the whole thing just worked. I’d highly recommend you go and check it out.’
Another, who goes by @bscaran, similarly claimed the dish was ‘delicious’, adding, ‘It was a really good portion size.’
Elsewhere, TikTok user @radoslavlalic95 took to the platform to review the bag, and said, ‘You have to try the Wetherspoons spice bag.’
Viewers took to the comment section to share their thoughts on the new menu item over a selection of TikTok posts, with one writing, ‘Yes I’ve been waiting for this one.’
A second added, ‘No way, I thought you could only get this in Ireland.’ A third said, ‘That looks so good I’m jealous.’
However, another wrote, ‘My sister got it yesterday and was over spiced but she enjoyed some of it though. The portion size was bigger than I expected it would be.’

It follows the news that Wetherspoons is set to open its newest pub on the old London Dungeon site – but punters needn’t fear, as the attraction’s resident medium has cleansed the boozer of ghosts.
Ahead of the chain’s latest opening, The Sun Wharf, on 30 September, The London Dungeon returned to its old haunt on Tooley Street for a ‘cleansing séance’.
To ensure spirits – of both kind – have a fresh start at their respective locations, the attraction’s resident medium purified the space by rounding up lingering ghosts and ghouls and directing them to their current home on the South Bank.
Opened in 1974, The London Dungeon was originally a walk-through wax exhibition of dark history, before later rebranding as an interactive horror experience retelling the bleak tales of London’s Victorian past.
After 39 years at Tooley Street, it upped sticks in 2013 to County Hall, South Bank, where it joined a host of popular attractions such as SEA LIFE London Aquarium and Shrek’s Adventure! London.
But the former location won’t be completely stripped of its sinister past, as punters can enjoy their favourite tipple whilst seated amidst eerie photographs and artefacts.
A London Dungeon spokesperson said: ‘For nearly 40 years, our Tooley Street location terrified and entertained visitors with chilling tales of London’s dark history.
‘Our move to the South Bank has allowed us to expand our horrifying repertoire and make it one of the most infamous attractions in the capital.

‘Tooley Street can rest easy now as we’ve ensured that all the ghosts have traversed the Thames to the South Bank, where historic horrors of Victorian London await.’
Meanwhile, for those hoping to pay a visit to the smallest Wetherspoons in the UK, you might want to limit your rounds – or face a desperate dash to toilets situated 150 yards away outside the venue.
Tucked away inside London’s Cannon Street railway station is The Sir John Hawkshaw – officially the tiniest Wetherspoons in the country.
With just 41 tables, it’s a far cry from the sprawling pubs the chain is usually known for. The venue is so tiny that there aren’t any restrooms, with customers having to dash across the concourse to use the station’s public toilets.
