A hip neighbourhood restaurant with ‘great vibes’ and iconic dishes is where you will now officially find the best dining in all of New South Wales.
It should come as no surprise to Sydneysiders that Cafe Paci in Newtown has walked away with Gourmet Traveller’s 2024 Award for best restaurant in the state.
Finnish-born chef Pasi Petanen has the city firmly under his culinary spell with a unique and inspired take on modern Australian dining.
Pasi’s creations at the Newtown eatery have also earned him the well-deserved Chef of the Year award.
The unassuming food genius first popped up on the city’s radar with standout cuisine at a Darlinghurst venue in 2013 that left Aussies wanting more.
And the Newtown location is fully booked thanks to dishes such as the potato and molasses bread, the ‘cult’ ox tongue taco and raw snapper with chilli and kumquat.
There are also ‘sublime’ pockets of ‘delectably fresh’ handmade pasta such as the spring pea ravioli with lemon, sage, vermouth butter and creamy-rich burrata.
Friday and Saturday nights see the addition of the dry-aged roast duck marinated in a vivid sweet sticky-orange sauce that diners have called an ‘absolute pleasure’.

Fans especially love Pasi’s bold and playful take on dining which manages to be simple enough in its flavours to achieve complexity, without being complicated.
‘Cafe Paci is without doubt my fave restaurant in Sydney. The quality of their food and service consistently blows me away, in all honesty I can recommend every dish on the menu,’ a diner said.
‘It’s taken me forever to get to Cafe Paci but it was SO worth persevering. It’s one of Sydney’s best. Incredible food, amazing flavour,’ another agreed.

‘Some call it Nordic European, some say modern Australian, but I say it’s simply awesome,’ a third chimed in.
One fan heaped praise on Pasi as the ‘Godfather’ of Sydney cooking for his Chef of the Year award: ‘Very well deserved Pasi and I’ll ask again, what took them so long?’
The award for Best Restaurant in Australia was given to Tasmania’s Agrarian Kitchen, whose menu features produce from their garden.
Other winners in the Gourmet Traveller’s awards were The Lake House in Daylesford for the Readers Choice Icon Award and fine dining Melbourne institution Vue De Monde, for Best Restaurant in Victoria for 2024.
