A Russian scientist close to Vladimir Putin claims the West is plotting to eliminate most of the human race with a virus, sparing only a small elite who will be served by robots.
Mikhail Kovalchuk, head of Russia‘s Kurchatov nuclear research institute, made the extraordinary remarks while addressing a forum of school teachers in Moscow.
His comments underline the kind of extreme conspiracy theories that critics warn are increasingly shaping Kremlin ideology, according to The Times.
Kovalchuk, 77, alleged that western countries were planning to unleash a deadly disease to reduce the number of people on earth.
He also claimed the West was using LGBT and child-free ideologies to curb populations because robots would soon be able to work better and more effectively.
‘The West … understands that a huge number of people are becoming unnecessary. They have begun to prepare for a population reduction,’ the Kremlin boffin told the Forum of Class Teachers, a Russian-backed organisation.
‘They introduced the LGBT agenda and for those who didn’t go along with it, they offered a second option – the child-free family.
‘It’s working brilliantly. In a generation or two, there’ll be no continuation of their bloodlines. Only a small elite, the ones they actually need, will remain.’

He added: ‘As for the rest – the people they don’t even see as human – they’ll be eliminated with biological weapons. A virus or something like that with a 90 per cent mortality rate will come along and mow them down.’
The Kremlin has forbidden both the promotion of LGBT rights and any portrayal of the benefits of choosing not to have children, deeming them threats to Russia’s future.
In 2023 Russia banned the ‘international LGBT movement,’ claiming it was an extremist group, cementing a long crackdown on the community.
And, that same year Putin demanded that Russian women give birth to ‘seven, eight or more’ children to halt a population slump.
The teaching forum was opened by Sergei Kiriyenko, a senior Kremlin official and former prime minister, who told his 1,000-strong audience that they were responsible for not only educating Russia’s children, but also shaping their beliefs.
Kovalchuk, who has been described as one of Putin’s close friends, told the forum that Russia needed to guard against such alleged western plots, reminding the teachers that their country’s only friends ‘are the army and the navy’.
He was joined on stage by Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, and Vladimir Medinsky, a former culture minister.
Both men were members of Russia’s negotiating teams for recent talks with the United States and Ukraine.
Last year, Kovalchuk is said to have ordered Russian scientists to speed up research into anti-ageing remedies that included 3D bioprinting, a new technology that scientists hope will one day give doctors the ability to ‘print’ organs and tissue on demand.
He also oversees a state-backed programme on research into genetics that involves Maria Vorontsova, an endocrinologist and Putin’s eldest daughter.
Putin, who turns 73 on Tuesday, referenced the research last month in China, when he discussed the prospect that people could soon ‘achieve immortality’ with President Xi.
The Forum of Class Teachers declined to comment.
