Chilling footage captured the moment a woman was dragged away by a crocodile after being snatched in its jaws while washing her clothes in an Indian river.
Video shows the giant reptile pulling the lifeless body of its victim, 57, downstream as shocked villagers shout helplessly from a nearby bridge.
Despite their cries for help, no one could reach her in time. Witnesses said the crocodile suddenly lunged at the woman and pulled her into the water before anyone could react.
Locals rushed to the spot in Odisha’s Jajpur district but were unable to rescue her from the reptile’s grip.
The incident occurred when the woman, identified as Soudamini Mahala, was bathing in the Kharasrota river on Monday afternoon, police said.
‘The woman was taking a bath in the Kharasrota river around 4 pm on Monday. A crocodile dragged her into the high stream of the river.
‘Villagers present on the riverbank tried to chase the reptile but failed to rescue her,’ the officer said.

On receiving information about the incident, fire brigade personnel and police reached the spot and initiated a search operation in the river, he said.
‘As we noticed that the crocodile was dragging the woman into the river, we jumped to rescue her, but all our efforts went in vain,’ said Naba Kishore Mahala, an eyewitness.

Muhammad Nur Akbar, 15, was with his friends at the Santan Ulu River in East Kalimantan on Tuesday when the beast snatched him.
Despite warnings from his classmates, Muhammad dipped his feet to wash in the murky brown waters, only for a crocodile to surge forward and sink its large fangs into his thigh.
The teenager screamed for help as his friends raced over and grabbed his shirt in a desperate tug-of-war with the bloodthirsty reptile.
However, they were overpowered, with the beast dragging Muhammad away into the depths.
Rescue teams were notified of the deadly attack. They arrived at the scene, where they found the predator still holding the boy’s motionless corpse.
Gruesome footage shows the reptile clutching the lifeless teen as it glides upstream near the river’s edge.
Fida Hurasani, head of the Kutai Kartanegara Regency Fire and Rescue Department, said: ‘The incident occurred during the day.
‘Residents immediately reported it to officers, including the police, and a search was launched immediately.
‘During the evacuation process, the crocodile was shot to release the boy’s leg. We managed to bring the body to the surface shortly afterwards.’
