A child has died after being hit by part of the convoy carrying the Australian Prime Minister‘s XIII team following their win against Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby.
It’s understood the child was part of a larger group of fans chasing the Australian NRL team’s bus on Sunday.
They were struck by a vehicle carrying private security that was behind the bus.
The collision occurred out of the players’ view as they left Santos National Football Stadium.
PNG is renown for its love of rugby and many locals camp outside team hotels in the hope of seeing their favourite players.
Residents had lined the streets when Australian men’s and women’s teams arrived in PNG on Friday.
Just hours before the crash, the country’s footy fanatics celebrated Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape’s announcement of the country’s official team name as it joined the NRL 2028 competition – the PNG Chiefs.
Marape and NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo both attended Sunday’s match.
