Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce felt inspiration from one of the greatest NBA big men of all time when he hit a Detroit Lions player with a shimmy in last week’s Sunday Night Football contest.
Kelce caught a pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the Week 6 game, faked that he was going to his left before cutting right and gaining significant yardage.
The move – which fooled safety Brian Branch and linebacker Jack Campbell – was inspired by one of the best players in basketball history.
‘They don’t wanna see me in post, man… They don’t wanna see me in the post. Hit they a** with a “Hakeem the Dream”,’ Kelce said.
‘Hakeem the Dream’, in this case, is former Houston Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon – a Hall-of-Famer and two-time NBA champion.
In addition to his on-court success, Olajuwon was known for essentially patenting the ‘Dream Shake’ – a pivot move that baffled defenders and became a very lucrative way for the Nigerian star to get points.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce emulated NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon on a play against Detroit

After catching a pass from Patrick Mahomes, Kelce used the ‘Dream Shake’ to get extra yards
Kelce’s emulation of that pivot move was intentional and was with Olajuwon in mind, as he explained to a teammate on the sidelines.
‘You weren’t even a part of the ’90s,’ the 36-year-old said. ‘You would have saw Hakeem Olajuwon hit em with the “Dream Shake”.
‘Do your research, you gotta do your research. I grew up watching that so I emulated that. Shoutout to “The Dream”.’
Kelce was stellar in the matchup – catching six passes for 78 yards to lead the Chiefs in receiving yards in a 30-17 victory over Detroit.
The Chiefs next host the Las Vegas Raiders in a matchup of two AFC West rivals.
