A makeup expert has revealed her step-by-step guide to avoiding dehydrated skin during long-haul flights.
Makeup artist and BBC Glow Up judge Val Garland has shared her hints and tips for keeping your skin glowing – even while travelling.
Air travel can wreak havoc on your skin due to low humidity, recycled air and stress-related factors.
But Val, who is famed globally for transforming some of fashion’s most famous faces, from Lady Gaga to Rihanna, knows what she’s talking about.
Follow Val’s tutorial for yourself to get healthy-looking skin – even when you’re on the plane.
She shared her advice on her Instagram @thevalgarland, writing: ‘From runway to runway, discover the ultimate long-haul beauty look with me, Val Garland at Heathrow.
‘Skin prepped, lips glossy, lashes lifted, this tutorial proves you can land looking fresh and ready for anything!’
In the clip, Val explains: ‘Today, we’re going on a long-haul flight. That means you need to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.’

Makeup artist and BBC Glow Up judge Val Garland has shared her hints and tips for keeping your skin glowing – even while travelling
She lays out the steps in her routine.
Step one: Hydrate and massage
Val says: ‘Flying can be really dehydrating on your skin, so you really need to lock in that moisture.’
She says she uses Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Serum, massaging it into the skin.
She follows with the Estée Lauder DayWear, to lock in the moisture.
Val adds: ‘It’s now time to sit back and enjoy your flight. Every so often, just top up that hydration. I’m using Elemis Superfood Delish.’
Step two: Sheet mask reset
‘It’s 30 minutes to landing,’ says Val, ‘it’s time to wake up for arrival. I’m going to use the Instant Magic Dry Sheet Mask from Charlotte Tilbury. It’s a dry mask, so there is no mess.’

Once the mask has been on for 15 minutes, you’re ready for makeup, Val explains.
Step three: Apply makeup 10 minutes before landing
Val says: ’10 minutes to landing? This is your makeup call.’
She adds: ‘It’s concealer time. Remember, only use concealer where you need it. Always place your concealer upwards and outwards. This will give you an instant lift.
‘I quite like to use my fingers, because then you can really work that product into the skin.
‘Next, I’m going to use the Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Skin Sheer glow Tint Foundation Stick. This is really going to enhance that glow that you’ve already locked in.’
Val then moves to focus on lips, cheeks and eyes.
She says: ‘One lipstick, three ways. I’m using the Estée Lauder Pure Colour Lipstick in Midnight Kiss.

The makeup artist says skin hydration is key, before then explaining her steps to apply makeup
‘Nothing says runway like gloss. High on the cheekbone, gloss across the eyelid, and also, gloss on the lips.’
Next, she applies mascara. She says: ‘No runway to runway look would be complete without mascara. I’m going to be using the MAC Stack Mascara for a lot of lash.
‘So here it is, your ultimate long-haul look, perfect for arrivals.
‘All you need now is a spray of your favourite perfume. Mine is Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt Eau de Cologne.’
Heathrow has partnered with Val to create the ultimate airport-ready look ahead of London Fashion Week, which kicks off next tomorrow, September 18.
The curated routine is part of Redefine Your Beauty – a new campaign from Heathrow and World Duty Free celebrating all things beauty and travel.
Running across all four terminals until October 5, the campaign features immersive experiences, exclusive retail offers and masterclasses from some of the world’s most iconic beauty brands.
